GULAB JAMUN

Here’s a classic recipe for Gulab Jamun, a popular Indian dessert:

Ingredients:

For the dumplings:

  • 1 cup milk powder
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup ghee or oil
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm milk
  • Chopped pistachios or almonds for garnish

For the syrup:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup rose water (optional)
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon saffron threads, soaked in 1 tablespoon hot water

Instructions:

  1. Make the dumplings: Mix milk powder, flour, salt, and baking soda. Add ghee or oil and mix until crumbly. Gradually add milk to form a smooth dough. Cover and let rest for 30 minutes.
  2. Shape the dumplings: Divide the dough into small balls (about 20-25).
  3. Fry the dumplings: Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. Fry the dumplings until golden brown (about 3-4 minutes). Drain and set aside.
  4. Make the syrup: Combine sugar, water, rose water (if using), lemon juice, cardamom powder, and saffron in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes or until the syrup thickens slightly.
  5. Soak the dumplings: Add the fried dumplings to the warm syrup and let them soak for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Serve: Garnish with chopped nuts and serve warm or at room temperature.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality milk powder for the best flavor.
  • Adjust the amount of rose water and cardamom powder to your taste.
  • Let the dumplings soak in the syrup for at least 30 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  • Gulab Jamun can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat before serving.

Enjoy your homemade Gulab Jamun!
